Introduction to the BYD Sealion 7 Dash Cam

The BYD Sealion 7 is one of Australia’s most exciting new EVs, combining comfort, power, and tech innovation. Among its hidden features is a ready-made dash cam setup that many owners don’t realise they can activate.

If you’ve just taken delivery of your brand-new BYD Sealion 7, you might’ve noticed the small camera housing neatly placed behind the rear-view mirror. Yep — that’s your dash cam mount, ready for action. But how does it all work? What do you need to get it recording? If you’re wondering how to get your Sealion 7 recording, this guide covers everything — from the correct camera module to installation, app setup, and tips for best performance.

1. What Comes Ready from Factory in Your Sealion 7

All Australian BYD Sealion 7 models come pre-wired for the OEM dash cam system, but none are delivered with the camera module or SD-card interface installed.
What you’ll find behind the rear-view mirror is a camera housing that’s ready for the OEM dash cam unit to be fitted.

The wiring and connector are already in place — usually taped and tucked neatly behind the trim. Once you have the correct camera and interface module, installation is quick and clean.

2. The OEM Camera Model and Connector Type

The genuine BYD OEM Dash Cam for the Sealion 7 uses the HC-3776940M camera module.
One key detail to note:

  • The Sealion 7 uses a cream/white Fakra-style plug (Type B),
  • While some other BYD models (like Sealion 6 or Seal) use the blue Fakra Type C connector.

If you buy the wrong variant, you’ll end up with a mismatch issue, so always double-check compatibility before ordering.

3. Interface Options — USB-C vs SD-Card Module

Out of the box, the Sealion 7 comes with a USB-C interface module. This allows you to plug in a USB-C flash drive to store footage.
However, for a more stable and continuous recording experience, it’s better to upgrade to the optional SD-Card interface module.

Option 1: USB-C Flash Drive

  • Uses the existing standard module
  • Plug in a USB-C flash drive to start recording
  • Ideal for short-term or test use

Option 2: SD-Card Module (Recommended)

  • Replaces the USB-C module
  • Uses high-endurance SD cards (128GB recommended, 256GB works for some)
  • Fewer read/write errors
  • Better heat resistance in Australian summers
  • Smoother playback from the infotainment system
  • More reliable under heavy use
  • Longer recording life

Tip: For continuous recording, use a high-endurance SD card (e.g. SanDisk Extreme or Samsung Pro Endurance).

4. Installation — Plug and Play

Once you have the right camera and interface module, installation is simple and takes around 10 minutes:

  1. Safely park the car and power it off.
  2. Gently remove the interior panel around the mirror housing.
  3. Locate the pre-installed connector (it may be taped inside).
  4. Connect the camera (HC-3776940M) to the plug.
  5. Insert your SD card or USB drive into the interface module.
  6. Reattach the trim, turn on the car and restart the infotainment system.

Restarting the Infotainment System

While parked safely and in “P”, press and hold the infotainment power or volume knob for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and restarts.
Once the system reboots, the DVR app (BYD’s dash cam app) should appear automatically.

5. Dash Cam App — “DVR”

The Dash Cam App in BYD’s system is called DVR.
It allows you to:

  • View, play, or delete recordings directly from the screen
  • Manually save important clips
  • Check storage usage and format the drive

If the app doesn’t appear after installation, restart the infotainment system again. In some cases, older software versions may need an update for the DVR app to show up.

6. Power and Recording Behaviour

The BYD OEM Dash Cam records automatically when the car is powered on and stops when the system shuts down.
It doesn’t record while the vehicle is off. However, some third-party apps can enable sentry mode-style recording, allowing footage to be captured when parked.
These are not official BYD features, so use them at your discretion.

7. Rear Camera Compatibility

Currently, the BYD Sealion 7 supports only the front OEM Dash Cam.
There’s no dedicated wiring or factory provision for a rear camera yet, and EEVA Store doesn’t currently stock any compatible rear unit.
We’re actively monitoring updates from BYD suppliers and will notify customers once a rear option becomes available.

8. Troubleshooting Tips

  • No image or recording: Check your connection.
  • DVR app missing: Restart infotainment; ensure firmware is up to date.
  • Drive not recognised: Reformat the SD or USB drive inside the car.
  • App freezes or crashes: Restart the infotainment system using the 10-second press method.

9. Summary — Why Go OEM?

The OEM dash cam fits perfectly into the Sealion 7 housing, integrates cleanly with the BYD system, and records in Full HD (1080p).
With the pre-installed wiring, you only need the right components — no extra cables or permanent modifications required.

Whether you’re using it for peace of mind, daily driving, or road trip memories, this setup keeps your footage clear and easily accessible.
